In Brazil we use a lot of condensed milk in our desserts. I personally LOVE condensed milk in any dessert. You can even use it in pina coladas or other fruit drinks. But did you know that you can take that can and turn it into dulce de leche? I know that you can actually buy dulce de leche prepared already in the supermarket, but if you happen to have a can of condensed milk around try making some dulce de leche. There is nothing like it when it’s fresh. The taste is like caramel but even better. You can use this on pancakes, coffee, cakes or you can even just put it on a spoon and enjoy. The meaning is candy of milk.
To prepare take a can of condensed milk, remove the paper then place the can in a small pot and fill it with enough water to come up to one inch from the top of the can. Poke two holes into the top of the can for venting. Boil the water rapidly, but don’t allow it to come up over the top, so that it doesn’t get into the holes. You will have to add a little water to the pot as it evaporates. Boil for around 2 hours, and you will have your product. You can also do this in a pressure cooker, but if you choose to do so, then don’t poke holes in can.
Wow…cool food tip that almost feels like science class. Nice to learn something new every day…thanks for providing today’s lessson!
I love giving out tips and sharing with people things that they might not know. =)
LOVE condensed milk here and homemade dulce de leche is a WOW. My background is Cuban so condensed milk is a staple for us too. My mom still makes me the dulce de leche via pressure cooker, may be time for me to make my own LOL.
Thanks.
I guess its a big latin thing. Yes try it out and let me know how you make out.
Hi, thank you for sharing this, I love this condensed milk and caramel thing and this is something I will definitely try to make, just a quick question on how can I keep this dulce? Can I store it in a jar and refrigerate? Thanks.
I learned how to make this when I was living in Belize. It is a great quick frosting for cakes. Do you use it as a frosting too? Thanks for sharing this piece….it makes me think of the wonderful flavor.
No Problem. Yes you can use it as frosting or filling in a cake. Super Delish!!
I looove dulce de leche. I like to make it like you say, but I don’t poke the holes… 😉
